What This Move Is
The controlled exit from shadow position: the lead unwinds the follow back out to face him in an open hold, ready for whatever's next. It's the missing half of shadow — the entries are easy to find, but a clean unwind is what lets you use shadow in real social dancing instead of getting stuck there.
Key Points
- Lead: Lead the unwind by sending her around in the open direction — reverse the path that brought her in. Keep the hand low and the turn gentle; she can't see you, so the lead has to be unmistakable.
- Follow: Feel the direction of the unwind and turn out onto your own axis. Spot the lead's face as soon as you come around.
- Timing: Unwind across 1-2-3, arrive facing on 4.
- Common mistake: A vague or rushed lead out — since the follow is facing away, an unclear unwind leaves her guessing. Make the exit lead bigger than you think you need to.
