New York Walk

Also known as: The Walk, NY Walk

The smooth travelling walk that defines New York line salsa — as the follower crosses the slot the leader walks past in the opposite direction, the two trading places along a clean straight line.

What This Move Is

The signature travelling step of NY/line salsa. Instead of staying on the spot, leader and follower walk past each other along the dance slot during a cross-body lead, trading ends of the line with a long, gliding step. It is the look that separates line salsa from the Cuban circle.

Lead & Follow It

The leader opens the slot early and walks his own line, keeping the frame steady so the follower can travel the full distance. The follower steps long and straight through the slot, staying on her own track rather than curving around.

The Thing Almost Everyone Gets Wrong

Stepping too short, so the couple never really travels and the walk collapses back into a basic. Commit to covering the ground — the move is the journey along the line, not a polite shuffle.

How It Connects

It lives inside the cross-body lead, so it flows straight into inside and outside turns or any line pattern, and returns you cleanly to open position.
