What This Move Is

Phrasing your breaks and accents to the clave (the 2-3 or 3-2 son clave pattern, the rhythmic "key/code" of the music played on the clave sticks) and other percussion. Hear the clave and conga, and align your accents and breaks to it.

Key Points

  • Either role: Listen for the clave and align accents to it — don't just count numbers.
  • Timing: Match 2-3 vs. 3-2 clave phrasing to where you place accents and freezes.
  • Common mistake: Only counting numbers and never listening to the clave; mismatching 2-3 vs. 3-2 phrasing.

Style Notes

The deepest musicality skill — clave literacy. Dancers who break on the clave look like they're dancing with the band, not just on top of it.
