Double Time / Half Time

SalsaIntermediateMusicalityBoth

Play with density. Move at twice or half the rhythmic density to match the music's energy.

This move builds: Musicality …on the always-on four — Connection, Frame, Comfort, Posture.

What This Move Is

Double time = dancing/stepping at twice the rhythmic density (two movements where you'd normally do one), matching faster instrumental passages. Half time = slowing to half the density (one movement spread over what would be two counts), often to match a smooth or sustained section. Half time pairs beautifully with body rolls and suspensions.

Key Points

  • Either role: Keep the underlying pulse even as you change density; the basic count never disappears underneath you.
  • Timing: Double time doubles the steps within the count; half time stretches one movement over two counts.
  • Common mistake: Tensing and rushing in double time (losing clean weight transfer); drifting off the beat in half time.

Style Notes

Switching between densities is how dancers "phrase" a song — fast on the busy parts, slow on the sustained parts. Use half time to create contrast and breathing room.
