Forward Basic (Front Break)
SalsaBeginnerFoundationsBoth
Break toward, not away. The basic stepped forward instead of back — the other half of your rhythm and the root of every travelling lead.
This move builds: Timing …on the always-on four — Connection, Frame, Comfort, Posture.

What This Move Is
The same six-step, eight-count rhythm as the basic, but you break forward on the first measure instead of back. It teaches your body the forward weight-shift that lives inside cross-body leads, walks, and most travelling figures — the basic and the forward basic together give you both directions of the rock.
Key Points
- Lead: Step forward L on 1, replace, close — initiate from your chest moving toward her, not from your toes. She reads your torso, so commit the lean a hair early.
- Follow: Mirror it — when he breaks forward you break back, keeping a light, even frame so the direction is unmistakable.
- Timing: On1 break forward on 1 (replace 2, close 3), back on 5; On2 the same footwork breaking on 2 and 6. Counts 4 and 8 are silent.
- Common mistake: Over-striding so your weight doesn't fully arrive, or lunging from the foot instead of leading with the body.
Style Notes
Pair it with the Back Basic and you own the full forward-and-back vocabulary the basic only half-teaches. Keep it small and grounded — this is a reset you can return to from anywhere.
